Le paillage

I purchased two hay rolls from a nearby farm (Daifuku Bokujo, Maja). After cutting the sugar cane sprout I proceeded to spread it, realizing that I might need another ten to eighteen rolls, and some help. The best would be to gather friends with (small) trucks to go and gather dry leaves etc. from nature. I shall enquire with the clean center also to check for availability of natural waste that we can use to cover the soil.

After testing I've established that the soil is one hundred percent clay, and its pH is neutral. We will now look for hay or bagasse (sugar cane residue), and if available cow manure, to cover the soil and let it rest. I will also start to gather raw garbage and create a dedicated area for composting.

This is the initial state of the farm after the last harvest of sugar cane. From now on I will test the soil for composition and pH, then cover it to let it rest for two to three months.
